The Day I Stopped Loving My Husband.

When you and your spouse first start dating, it’s that constant butterfly feeling. Their kisses made you drunk and holding their hand makes your heart race. What an exhilarating experience!

Then one day…those feelings are gone. The butterflies flew away and youre left wondering if You even loved them anymore.

We are all a little familiar with this situation either because we’ve felt this before, watched it happen in a movie or had this happen to someone we loved in our family. Usually, the couple splits up because the feeling isn’t there anymore.

I started to ask myself, what is love and what does it look like? Then it hit me.

Jesus probably didn’t feel like hanging up on a cross, naked and beaten, for me.

The Bible talks about love quite a bit. It you notice, none of the scriptures describe love as a feeling but an action. Love is selfless and humbling. Its putting others before you even when you don’t feel like it whether that be your spouse, friend, brother, sister…whatever. Obviously the love you have for your spouse is a little different than you would have for family member but that’s a different topic.

The greatest commandment God gives us in the Bible is this…

Matthew 22:36-40

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Wow…the greatest commandment is to LOVE. If I don’t even know what love is and I’m basing it off a feeling, how the heck am I supposed to follow this HUGE commandment God is giving me? How do I know if I’m even loving GOD?

Luckily, we have a passage in the Bible that describes what love is…

1 Corinthians 12:4-8

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking it is not easily angered it keeps no record of wrongs 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies they will cease; where there are tongues they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

To love God with all our heart means to follow Him, humble ourselves to His authority and live our life for Him. Otherwise, we are not really loving Him! And if I’m basing my relationship off of a feeling, I’m not really loving Them! Even when I’m sad or having a hard day, I can’t stop serving God and loving my significant other. That’s just not how things work. That’s not TRUE love.

Lets walk through the day truly loving Christ and the people around us. Remember, we can’t do it on our own. Ask God to walk with you through the day with humility and love for others.

Love y’all!
